International students arriving on a Chinese university campus

The first month sets your legal and practical footing in China. Moroccan students who treat the ISO checklist as mandatory — not optional — avoid last-minute police or dorm issues. This guide is orientation, not a substitute for campus instructions.

Arrival day: what to carry and whom to contact

  • Passport, visa, Admission Notice, JW201/JW202 (or forms your school issued), insurance proofs if requested
  • Printed ISO address, dorm building, and emergency WeChat/phone of the international office
  • Enough cash or a workable card for taxis and first meals until mobile pay is set up
  • Photos and document scans on your phone and in cloud backup

Campus registration & temporary residence

Most universities require on-site registration within a short window after arrival. Dorm check-in often triggers temporary residence registration with local police via the school. Bring originals; keep copies. If you live off-campus later, rules differ — ask ISO before signing a lease.

Residence permit: plan within ~30 days

X1 holders typically must apply for a residence permit within about 30 days of entry. Universities usually schedule medical exams (if needed), collect documents, and escort or guide group appointments. Start as soon as ISO opens the process — appointment slots and medical results take time. Exact documents and fees follow local Exit-Entry and campus notices.

  • Follow ISO’s document list (passport, photos, registration forms, JW, admission materials, medical)
  • Do not travel on expired status assumptions — confirm travel rules after visa conversion with ISO
  • Keep payment receipts and the residence permit card safe once issued

Dorm, SIM, and banking basics

  • Dorm: complete bedding/deposit steps, learn gate hours, and report maintenance through the stated channel
  • SIM: campus stalls or ISO partners often simplify real-name registration with your passport
  • Bank: open an account when ISO says your registration papers are ready; bring passport and student ID; ask about mobile pay linking
  • Budget: expect deposits, medical fees, and first-month incidentals beyond tuition

Always follow your university ISO

Cities and campuses differ. WhatsApp groups and seniors help with tips, but legal steps belong to ISO and local Exit-Entry. When advice conflicts, choose the written campus checklist.
